Position Overview:

As an Apprentice Plater at Francis Brown, you will begin to develop your skills in professional workmanship while maintaining the highest standards of safety. Under supervision, you will learn to maintain safe working practices throughout the facility, including general housekeeping of your work areas. You will be introduced to slinging duties and tack welding as your training progresses, adhering to both company and client specifications.

A key part of your apprenticeship will involve learning to report any defects and shortages to production supervisors. You will assist in plating operations according to relevant work instructions and production needs. Learning to read and interpret drawings and information will be crucial as you prepare steel to specification and assist in assembling projects accurately.

You will gain competence in cutting and preparing plates/sections, and you will support the assembly of fabrication work for final assembly and welding. Collaboration with inspection/quality teams and other departments will be part of your role. You will also learn to use the fabrication halls and company equipment efficiently and safely.

Apprenticeship Schedule:

  • Spend one day per week at Hartlepool College for theoretical and technical training.
  • Work the other four days at Francis Brown Ltd, applying practical skills and contributing to projects.

Your Background:

  • Interest in pursuing a career in structural fabrication.
  • Keen to learn and understand engineering drawings.
  • Willingness to undertake internal/external training as required to develop necessary skills.
  • Motivated to work both individually and as part of a team to meet project requirements.
